Using Adobe Illustrator, I created a silhouette of something I find attractive and something I find repulsive. For attractive, I chose to take a picture of a saxophone which plays beautiful music. For repulsive, I used that same musical motif and chose a piece that I find extremely repulsive to create the interesting silhouette.
I wanted to make the music to flow over top of the saxophone silhouette to really juxtapose the two parts. I laser cut the piece on a grey illustration board so that it would not be the clean white paper that music is found. Rather, I used a dull grey to emphasize this idea of repulsive. I then Etched the silhouette of the saxophone to really reveal an interesting contrast between the music and the instrument itself.
Most people do not think of music as being repulsive, which is why I decided to contradict the idea that all music is attractive and create this piece. In doing this, I framed my passion of music and art while creating a thoughtful piece that encourages the viewer to really think about the piece.
